What a silent disco is actually solving
It looks like a novelty and it is often bought as one, but silent disco solves four real production problems.
Noise restrictions. Outdoor venues, residential neighbours and venues with a hard curfew. The event keeps going because nothing is leaving the building.
Shared space. A gallery, a lobby or a conference floor where one room's audio would run over everything else happening nearby.
Multiple channels at once. Most systems run several channels, so two or three DJs, or a programme in more than one language, can run in the same room and guests choose.
Installations and exhibits. Audio that belongs to a piece of work travels with the visitor instead of being broadcast over the whole space.
Where we have used it
Sonar supplied the silent disco headphone system for Reflections of Jacksonville, a multisensory gallery installation from Downtown Vision on West Duval Street. The exhibition's soundscape ran to headphones alongside projected imagery, so each visitor experienced the audio with the work rather than the gallery being filled with it.

Questions we get asked
How many headphones can you supply?
Tell us your headcount when you enquire and we will confirm what we can cover for your date. Because headphone counts are the whole constraint, we confirm numbers before we take a booking rather than after.
Can we run more than one DJ or channel?
Yes — that is one of the main reasons to use the format. Guests switch channels on the headset itself.
Is it good for a venue with a noise curfew?
It is the standard answer to one. Nothing is going through speakers, so the event can continue past the point a PA would have to stop.
Can we use it for a gallery or an installation rather than a party?
Yes, and it works especially well there. That is exactly what we supplied for Downtown Vision’s Reflections of Jacksonville installation.
Who collects the headphones at the end?
We do, and we staff it. Recovering several hundred headsets from a crowd at the end of a night is a real job and it is included.
